Sociology of Literature

Topics for this Sociology of Literature sections may include analyses of the social and economic factors that inform the creation and production of literature, socio-cultural factors that operate to define some forms of written work as literary, and other forms as journalistic, as popular works for mass consumption, or even as sensational tracts. Included in the Sociology of Literature are analyses of the occupational groups and taste-makers who have the tasks of selecting and credentialing some written works as examples of literature--who patrol the boundaries taste, between literature and other forms of written work. The Sociology of Literature also makes room for the application of social theory to the lives and times of authors and to the interpretation of their texts, and to the changing meanings of texts over time and across social contexts.
People interested in participating in the Sociology of Literature sessions should send abstracts of approximately 250 words, along with proposed titles, and contact information (Name, address, affiliation, email address and telephone number) to: Gary L.
